The Edo Queens Football Club of Benin have emerged champions of the Nigeria Women Football League premiership after playing 1-1 with Bayelsa Queens in an explosive match played under a tensed atmosphere at the Samson Siasia Stadium Yenagoa in the final game of the 2023/24 NWFL Super six tournament.
Emem Essien was on target today as she netted in the opening goal in 29th minute of play with a well calculated bicycle kick inside the six yards box.
Bayelsa Queens did everything thing to pull one back before half time but Edo Queens held them strength for strength, speed for speed and tactics for tactics until the referee sounded his whistle to bring the first quarter of the game to an end, putting the score line at 1-0 in favour of Edo Queens.
Bayelsa Queens got the equalizer in 48th minute of second half from a long range free kick by Olapde Zainab.
The equalizer triggered off tension and anxiety among the teams, fans and officials as anticipation became high.
The fans were divided some supported the home team while others supported Edo Queens.
At a stage you could see frustration written on the faces of Bayelsa Queens fans, particularly on hearing the score line between Rivers Angels and Heartland Queens in Nembe which ended 1-1.
In the mid of second half, Bayelsa Queens took over dominance fighting hard to get a winning goal but Edo Queens defense line up did a perfect job by preventing Bayelsa Queens massive attack force from penetrating into Edo Queens goal mouth.
The Moses Aduku-led sensational ladies worked hard to ensure they hold the former champions to putting an end to their dominance in the Nigeria Women Football League NWFL.
The red -hot Edo Queens girls gave good account of themselves throughout the duration of the match giving their opponent a run for their money.
Every player on the pitch played a vital role in this historic victory.
The match ended 1-1 with Edo Queens having 11 points with 11 goals. While Bayelsa Queens got 9 points and Rivers Angels 9 points.
At the end of the 100 minutes duration, Edo Queens was crowned champions of the season of the 2023/24 premiership season with a ticket to represent Nigeria at the continental level.
