A deadly airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force has left several persons killed and others injured at Dilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border.

The strike was said to have happened on Saturday evening in Yobe State, near Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, in a market known for attracting traders and buyers from surrounding communities, including Giedam, Gubio, parts of the Chibok axis and Benisheikh.

At the time, business was ongoing before the situation turned chaotic.

Speaking on the incident, the Yobe State Police Command said it was still compiling information as security agencies assess the situation on ground.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Dilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border, and we are currently gathering information on what transpired.

“At this moment, we do not have confirmed casualty figures, as details are still being verified.

“Security agencies are on the ground assessing the situation, while efforts are ongoing to ensure proper documentation and response, after which the public will be duly informed with accurate and official updates,” the command said.

Local sources, however, said the operation targeted suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to be operating around the area, highlighting the market’s exposure to ongoing security threats.

“The insurgents usually come to the market to collect levies from traders and gather supplies,” a resident shared.

Another resident in Damaturu said the fighter jet was tracking the suspects at the time but failed to hit its intended target, resulting in casualties among civilians.

“At least 10 people were killed, while several others sustained injuries.”

Emergency response efforts were ongoing as of press time, with injured victims taken to hospitals in Giedam and Damaturu for treatment, while families continued to search for missing relatives.

Newstracktoday quoted Daily Sun Newspapers that the Nigerian Air Force was yet to issue an official statement.
