Nigeria’s immediate past Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has said that Muhammadu Buhari did not tolerate corruption when he was the nation’s president as he recorded one of the highest convictions in his time.

Malami, who spoke on Arise News on Tuesday night, said that the late president did not tolerate corruption throughout his term.

He said, “During the period of President Muhammadu Buhari, corruption was not thriving at all,” Malami said firmly.

“If you talk of convictions associated with high-profile corruption cases, the government recorded convictions in thousands.”

According to the former AGF, Nigeria recovered over $2 billion in plundered cash when Buhari was in office.

He disclosed that the Buhari government implemented structural reforms, such as the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN), to combat money leakages.

“He brought about the Single Treasury Account, which created a governance-wide visibility associated with funding the finances of the government,” he said.

Internationally, Buhari’s administration has received accolades from institutions such as the African Union, which named him the continent’s anti-corruption champion, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Malami revealed.
