Senator Joseph Ikpea of Edo Central Senatorial District has called for peace, unity, and renewed patriotism as Nigeria celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a statement issued to journalists in Benin City, Ikpea also urged Nigerians to support and collaborate with the Federal Government and state authorities in ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
He further called on the people of Edo Central to take ownership of security within their communities, stressing the need to complement government initiatives through vigilance, cooperation, and collective responsibility.
He also paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, whose annulment led to his imprisonment and eventual death in detention.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Ikpea emphasized the need to consolidate on the people-focused interventions of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who previously represented the district in the Senate before assuming office as governor of the state.
His words, “Today is a day that we cannot joke with in the democratic history of Nigeria. We must work together to sustain the democracy that people like Chief MKO Abiola, his late wife, Kudirat and several other people died for. Several others incapacitated for life.
“Nigeria is going through trying times in the area of security but it is obvious that the federal government, the state under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo are doing so much to check insecurity, these efforts should be supported by all of us.”
