Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has listed five states – Edo, Ondo, Taraba, Bauchi and Ebonyi to have accounted for 90 percent of reported cases of Lassa fever in 2025 while 10 percent were reported from 16 other states
NCDC, in an epidemiology report for week 33 of 2025 (11th-17th August) released in Abuja, said that of the 90 percent confirmed cases, Ondo State reported 33 percent, Bauchi State reported 23 percent, Edo State reported 17 percent, Taraba State reported 14 percent and Ebonyi State reported 3 percent.
It also revealed that 21 states recorded, at least, one confirmed case across 106 local government areas and the predominant age group affected was 21-30 years, while the male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases stood at 1:0.8
Meanwhile, the epidemiology report indicated that the number of suspected and confirmed cases decreased compared to what was reported for the same period in 2024, adding that no new healthcare worker was affected in the reporting epidemiological week 33.
It further noted that in week 33, the number of new confirmed cases decreased from 12 in epidemiology week 32 of 2025 to 5 in epidemiology week 33, disclosing that the few cases were reported in Bauchi, Ondo and Edo States.
It disclosed that cumulatively as at week 33, 2025, 159 deaths have been reported with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.6 per cent which is higher than the CFR for the same period in 2024 (17.2%).
