EFCC Beams Searchlight On Tompolo, Says Nobody Is Above “The” Law

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the agency is beaming its searchlight on Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for allegedly spraying naira on his 54th birthday ceremony.

The anti-graft agency disclosed this in an X post on Monday.

Many Nigerians had taken to social media on Sunday to draw the EFCC’s attention to alleged naira abuse by Tompolo, after a netizen shared a video of the Niger Delta chieftain spraying naira notes.

The event captured in the video reportedly occurred at Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April.

Reacting to the controversy generated, the EFCC said, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”

The agency has consistently drawn Nigerians’ attention to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended) which stipulates that “spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both.”
