The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has okayed the distribution of food to 100,000 vulnerable families in nine local government areas of the state.
It was said that the order for the food distribution came hours after some residents embarked on peaceful protest over hunger at Dikwa, a liberated town in the central part of the state.
The protesting locals had also threatened to move to the bush to join insurgents if their situation was not addressed.
But Zulum, at a meeting with ward committees comprising traditional leaders, elders and local leaders, announced immediate approval of foods distributions to vulnerable families.
“I have approved the distribution of palliative to 100,000 families in MMC and Jere Local Government areas to ease the hardship faced by our people in the wake of the rising cost of food and other essential goods,” Zulum said.
Zulum said the distribution exercise will start in the “coming days.
“We will start with the wards in the heart of the city, Shehuri North and South, Feezan, Hausari, Gamboru and Mafoni. In each ward, at least 4000 vulnerable families will benefit,” he explained.
At another event, the governor announced more food palliative to families in other local governments in the southern part of the state.
The local governments include Biu, Hawul, Shani, Kwaya Kusar, Askira-Uba, Chibok and Bayo.
The Borno food crisis is exacerbated by over a decade of insurgency, as farmers are yet to return to their farmlands after their forceful eviction in the wake of Boko Haram attacks.
