Market women in the aegis of Ikpoba Hill Market Women Association, has protested the killing of Success Izekor, 36, by her husband, Mr. Kelvin Izekor.
Speaking with Journalists during the protest in Benin, one of the protesters, Mrs. Odion Asemota, said the late Success was stabbed in her neck by her husband while lying on her bed.
She said she died with her four months pregnancy.
Mrs. Asemota, who said the deceased was a trader at the Ikpoba Hill Market, added that, she was an easy going woman and that they can’t fold their hands and allow her death be swept under the carpet.
Asemota alleged that the husband’s mother has been going about boasting of how she is going to do everything humanly possible to free her son.
She said that, following that threat, they, the market women will not allow such to happen.
She called on the government and other well meaning Nigerians to prevail to ensure that justice is served
Also speaking, the elder sister to the deceased, Mrs. Ugiagbe Iziegbe, said, her late sister, while alive, was constantly assaulted by her husband.
She further called on the federal and the state governments to come to their rescue and give her late sister justice.
Recall that the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, has earlier confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying that the husband was about to be lynched by irate mob before the police arrived to arrest the suspect.
Yamu said, “On 22/02/2025 at about 22:00hrs, information was received that one Kelvin Izekor of No 50 Upper Mission extension, Benin-City has killed his wife named Success Izekor aged 38yrs and was about to be lynched by an irate mob.
“Operatives of the Aduwawa Division swiftly responded to the report and met the lifeless body of the woman lying in the pool of her own blood with deep cuts on her head.
“It took serious efforts by the police operatives to pacify the mob, rescue, and take the suspect into custody for investigation. The victim was removed and rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.”
Yamu said the state Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, decried the recent cases of spouses being violent against each other while assuring the public of diligent investigation into the death of the woman, stressing that whoever found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.
