Palpable fear on Sunday, gripped the minds of worshippers of a particular pentecostal church situated around Murtala Mohammed Way in Benin City, as gunmen suspected to be hoodlums invaded it and shot one of its members dead in a broad daylight.
It was learnt that the ugly incident happened when the said victim, known as Success and other worshippers were taking their Sunday School’s teaching in the morning.
The victim who happened to be a choir member of the church, was said to have received an urgent telephone call, and stepped out of the church hall, possibly to attend to the caller.
According to an eyewitness who does not want his name mentioned in print: “Immediately he stepped out, one of the gunmen held him by his waist within the church premises.
“In the ensuing confusion, Success was wrestled to the floor, while another assailant emerged and shot him on the floor.
“The gunmen thereafter collected his [Success] mobile phone before fleeing the scene.”
However, all attempt made to revive him didn’t yield any results as he was pronounced dead at a private hospital he was taken to for treatment.
The Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying: “investigation is on to arrest the perpetrators.”
