The Nigeria Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET), has urged the federal government to implement the 2018 Disability Acts with the view of promoting inclusivity and taking care of the persons with physical disabilities in the country.

The association, through its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Ngbede Ochoche, made the appeal at a rally to herald their forthcoming event in Benin.

He decried that children with special needs cannot access many places like other children because of the way they are structured, therefore those concerned should adhere to the 2018 Disability Acts to give those with special needs a sense of belonging.

“In 2018, the federal government signed the disability bill into law that gives the right to the children with special needs, that in the environment, there should be inclusivity, you go to the market, there should be inclusivity, you go to the school, there should be inclusivity, you go to the kitchen, there should be inclusivity.

“2018 disability act, says after four years, all the public buildings, will be modified including schools to ensure that it will be friendly with the persons with disability so that somebody who is on a wheelchair can easily go to any place without being helped.

“He doesn’t need you and I to assist him. He can wheel himself into your office and come out of your office”, Ochoche said.

Speaking also, the state chairman of the association, Comrade Monday Esele, commended governor Godwin Obaseki for paying them their 30 percent special allowance to encourage the special teachers handling the special children in their schools.

“What we want, is inclusive education and also, we need more teachers in special schools.

“I want to use this opportunity to commend our able governor for the interest he has shown in our special schools.

“He gave us 30 percent special allowance to encourage special teachers.

“So, we really commend him for what he is doing and that we the special teachers will not let him down” Esele said.

On the part of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State council’s chairman, Festus Alenkhe, he thanked the association for taking up such a hard task of teaching the special children.

He urged them not to relent in their efforts in reforming them to become useful persons in the society.
