Member representing Oredo West constituency at the Edo State House of Assembly, Dr. Richard Edosa has footed the registration bills of 300 prospective Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), candidates.
Doling out the money to them in his office in Benin, the lawmaker said education still remains a pillar on which every developed country, nation stands and that any country that gets its education right, is on a sure way to get every other thing right.
Dr. Edosa said for Nigeria to rank high among other developed nations, its youths must be trained and educated and that, this training can either be acquired in the university or in the polytechnic.
He said however, it is unfortunate that those who have the ambitions to further their education have no means to take the first step, which is, the buying of the JAMB registration form, hence his intervention.
“Our children are intelligent people but not all of them can afford the JAMB registration money.
“So, this is our way of alleviating the effect of the economic hardship on our children. This is our way of encouraging them to go to school.
“We did this about the third time and we hope to continue because the value of education in nation-building cannot be overemphasized and this is part of what determines the fate of our youth.
“Whether they will go into the university or they will not be able to get to university. It might just be because of this money to register them that they don’t have.
“So we are trying what we can do to remove as much as possible from the streets into school”, Edosa said.
The Oredo lawmaker who is serving under the platform of the Labour Party (LP) said his gesture cuts across political divides, just as he called on other lawmakers within and outside the state to learn to extend a helping hand to the less privileged in the society, pointing out that together, they can all make the society a better place for everyone to live in.
“My messages to other law makers is that, in the midst of legislation, we should also remember our constituents.
“We should also remember the people of our constituents most especially in terms of in the area of education, youth empowerment.
“And let us do our best to represent them fully both in legislation, constituency projects, execution, and philanthropic acts that will benefit the people and also our state”, Edosa added.
Expressing her joy over the kind gesture, one of the beneficiaries, Olotu Miracle, who said she would like to study Theatre Arts in the university, thanked the donor for coming through for them in this critical time.
She promised never to disappoint the donor but to make the best out of the opportunity given her through this gesture.
Also speaking, Richard Simeon commended the lawmaker for his kindness, promising to make the best out of the opportunity.
