No fewer than five police officers who were among those who provided security for the September 21 Edo State gubernatorial poll were said to have lost their lives in a road accident along the Zaria-Kano road near Karfi Village, by the Trailer Park.
This was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Tuesday while returning to their base.
The FRSC said, “The crash was reported by the Kura Local Government Police Division, involved two vehicles: a trailer and a Toyota Hummer Bus with registration number 14B101KN belonging to Kanoline. The accident, which took place at approximately 0115 hours, involved a total of fifteen individuals.
“Sadly, five lives were lost, and ten people sustained varying degrees of injuries. The victims were identified as members of the Nigeria Police Force returning from a special assignment in Edo State, where they had been deployed for election monitoring.”
The statement further revealed that preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicated that the crash was caused by excessive speeding. This caused the driver of the Hummer bus to lose control, resulting in a collision with a parked trailer.
