France captain Kylian Mbappe has become the focus of a diplomatic controversy after Paraguay’s government condemned racist comments allegedly directed at him by a Paraguayan senator following the nation’s elimination from the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
In a statement issued on Monday, Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the remarks made by Senator, describing them as inconsistent with the country’s principles of human dignity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
“The remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla, directed at the captain of the French national team, Kylian Mbappe, are contrary to the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity, which our country promotes,” the ministry said.
The government’s unusually swift rebuke came after Amarilla reportedly made racially offensive comments about the France captain in the aftermath of Paraguay’s exit from the World Cup over the weekend.
Although the foreign ministry did not reveal the specific comments made by the senator, it stated that Paraguay unequivocally rejects all forms of discrimination.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering tolerance, equality and respect in public discourse and international relations.
The controversy has extended beyond the football pitch, reviving wider concerns about racism in the sport and highlighting the duty of public figures to uphold principles of respect and inclusion.
The episode has further intensified the global debate over racism in football, with sporting authorities and governments continuing efforts to tackle discriminatory conduct both on and off the field.
