The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has raised concerns about his future political participation, stating that he cannot be certain he will still be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi alleged that his businesses have been subjected to persistent frustration and described what he believes are increasing challenges facing opposition figures in Nigeria.
Responding to a question about whether Nigerians should expect to see his name on the 2027 presidential ballot, Obi cautioned against making assumptions, saying, “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you.”
His comments have since attracted widespread attention, fueling discussions about Nigeria’s political climate and the difficulties opposition politicians say they face as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general election
“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”
Speaking further, Obi clarified that while he was not levelling a direct accusation, his daily life has been plagued by targeted obstruction.
According to the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, the authorities avoid direct confrontation, but their hand has been evident in his routine hurdles.
“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally,” Obi said.
Buttressing his point, Obi revealed a recent airport encounter where officials allegedly locked his vehicle while ignoring other parked cars.
He added that upon identification, he was dismissed by the officer in charge.
“But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’
“I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” Obi said.
