The Edo State Police Command said it has commenced an investigation into a disturbing incident involving an alleged brutalisation of one Hon. Okai Akhani by individuals known as members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
Recall that a video clip of the incident, which occurred on Saturday 26th July 2025, has since gone viral and elicited widespread public concern and condemnation.
In a statement made available by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu Joel, said the Command condemns in strong terms any forms of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, or abuse of authority by individuals or groups operating under any guise.
Accordingly, to the police image maker, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
He said the Command will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved.
According to him “While we continue to support collaborative efforts in community policing, including the role of vigilante groups in complementing security operations, such roles must be carried out within the ambit of the law and with respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens”,
Yamu said the CP urged the members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, and to allow the Police carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident, noting that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
