Use Your Expertise To Address Nation’s Healthcare Challenges, Ezemonye, Tells 51 Inductees

The Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye has challenged the 51 newly qualified medical doctors of the university to use their expertise to address the challenges facing the healthcare sector in the country.

He made the call at the 19th Oath-taking/induction ceremony for the newly qualified medical doctors of the university.

Prof. Ezemonye said that unarguably, the world is facing numerous healthcare challenges ranging from emerging diseases to increasing burden of chronic illnesses and that their skills are needed to address these pressing issues.

Ezemonye said that while they are practicing, they should remember the guiding principles that have shaped the practice of medicine for centuries.

“Undoubtedly, the world faces numerous healthcare challenges, ranging from emerging diseases to increasing burden of chronic illnesses. Your skills and expertise are urgently needed to address these pressing issues. I have no doubt that you, the inductees, will rise to the occasion and contribute your quota to the health and well-being of your communities and the society at large.

“As you embark on this ancient, noble and learned profession, I urge you to remember the Hippocratic Oath, the guiding principles that have shaped the practice of Medicine for centuries. The oath reminds you of your duty to preserve life, alleviate suffering, and treat all patients with compassion and respect.

“Igbinedion University has always been a beacon of excellence in education, and you are a testament to that tradition. We remain committed to championing higher education revolution in Nigeria through innovation, entrepreneurship, bespoke research in tandem with the University’s motto of Knowledge and Excellence.

“We pride ourselves in our smart campus, centres of excellence, cosmopolitan future-ready graduates, world-class professionals, fully accredited programmes and internationalization of our pedagogical profile.

“As you step into the world beyond this auditorium, remember the values instilled in you – compassion, integrity and commitment to lifelong learning. These are the pillars that will uphold you in your practice and in every life you touch”, Ezemonye said.

Speaking on the theme:”Medical practice: Nurturing and sustaining the ethics of an ancient, noble and learned profession in the 21st century, the guest speaker, Prof. King-David Terna Yawe, challenged the inductees to leverage on modern day technology to ply their trade.

He also urged them to always put the interest of their patient first in all that they do.

The past president, West African College of Surgeons, Department of Surgery University of Abuja advised the inductees to work with the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA)and other relevant associations within the profession.

Also speaking, Dean, School of Clinical Medicine, Dr. Imesidayo Eboreime-Oikeh, admonished the young doctors to always make themselves solutions to the nation’s problems and not the other way round as they sojourn on their field of endeavour.
